The only times that a computer user is likely to discover a Microsoft MSO file is if they are sent a message containing a Microsoft office document, but do not have the proper program to open it. In that case, since the document cannot be opened, the email will have both the document attached, as well as the MSO file. People often mistakenly see the MSO file and think that it is something that they need to open; however, attempting to open an MSO file will only result in an error message, as they do not contain any real, tangible information for a computer user.

More Info Regarding File Extension MSO
Not all Microsoft Word programs have used the MSO file extension; the main version which supported this type of file was Microsoft Office 2000. The purpose of the MSO file in an email message is to enable to recipient to view the document without actually having to download it. Rather, they can view it within the actual body of the email. This was done for convenience's sake, and the MSO was used to facilitate such an arrangement. Most people would never even notice that an MSO file was incorporated within the body of their email; unless they were to examine the details of the transaction, the MSO file name would normally remain hidden.
On a Macintosh computer, the Microsoft MSO file would be associated with the Microsoft Entourage program. Files that were generated through that program and then sent in email messages often included embedded MSO files. Again, though, the recipient would never usually be alerted to the presence of the MSO file, and it worked basically behind the scenes to enable the document's to be viewed within the body of the email message.
Other than a typical Microsoft Word document - which usually uses the file extension DOC - an MSO file is most commonly found from another Microsoft program. It has been used at various times in the past for Microsoft Office macro reference files. This type of file is typically generated when a user saves a Microsoft Office document as a web site or web page. The MSO file, in this case, would serve basically as a style sheet for the layout of the page. It would also be an embedded part of the file, and would rarely - if ever - come to the attention of the publisher or anyone who viewed the final result.
With MSO files that result from web pages generated through a Microsoft Office document, a computer user can usually open them with a simple text program. However, the contents would be indecipherable, as they would be comprised primarily out of various types of code. Therefore, on their own, these files are of negligible value to the typical computer user. Should you run across an MSO file extension on your computer, chances are that it can be safely deleted - unless you currently create documents that might incorporate them. They are, however, very small files and deleting them would do little to free up disk space on your computer.
Error messages resulting from MSO files are very rare. The main reason that one would occur would be in the event that a Microsoft Office document was sent to someone through the program, and the recipient does not have access to the program; an error regarding the MSO file might then appear. Also, should a web page be generated through Microsoft Office, and the MSO file is inadvertently deleted or misplaced, attempting to view it might result in an error message that mentions an MSO file; neither of these instances are huge cause for concern, though.
